Wu Hao Chronology

1932 – Oct. 23, born in Nanking

1934 – Evacuates with family to Xiangquan

      Village, Jiangsu province.

      While embarking on journey by boat, witnesses the low-altitude bombing of Nanking by Japanese planes and a city ablaze.

1935 – Second and third younger sisters fall ill and die during family’s flight.

1936 – During family flight, grandmother is permanently blinded by a high fever.

1937 – During stay in countryside, witnesses the anti-Japanese resistance of armed peasants, the Red Gun Corps and Yellow Gun Corps. The village’s youthful population is wiped out.

1938 – Family relocates to Nanking.

1939 – Attends Changle Rd. elementary school.

      Enjoys reading comic books with historic and cultural themes.

1945 – Attends Zhongying Middle School. Forced by illness to take a leave of absence from school.

1948 – Attends preparatory courses at Suzhou Provincial Vocational High School.

      Accompanies relative on journey on the ship “New Health” from Shanghai to Taiwan.

1949 – Relative arranges for position in the General Headquarters of the Air Force as a copy clerk.

1950 – Awarded first prize in educational painting category in Ministry of Defense talent competition.

1951 – Awarded first prize in Ministry of Defense talent competition, wood block print category.

     - Begins studies with Li Chung-sheng. Becomes friends with Ouyang Wen-yuan, Ho Kan, Hsiao Ming-hsien, Hsiao Chin, Li Yuan-chia and Chen Tao-ming.

1952 – Promoted to warrant officer for distinguished performance; put in charge of Lung Chiang St. bomb shelter.

     - Begins painting at bomb shelter along with Ouyang Wen-yuan and Hsia Yan.

1953 – Begins sketching with calligraphy brush, studies oil painting.

     - Ouyang Wen-yuan suggests forming an art guild, but idea is not realized due to political climate.

1954 – Often visits with ho Kan at Chingmei Primary School, where the latter taught, to exchange views and ponder works of art.

     - Studies Dunhuang frescoes and folk art. Becomes enamored with the work of Matisse.

1955 – Joint submission with Ouyang Wen-yuan, Hsia Yan, Hsiao Chin, Ho kan, Hsiao Ming-hsien, and Li Yuan-chia of request to organize art guild is rejected by superiors.

     - Professor Li Chung-sheng relocates to Taichung.

1956 – Participates in National Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition.

     - Most members of immediate painting circle are selected to participate in National Art Exhibition; officially form Ton Fan Group.

     - Painting Temple exhibited at National Art Exhibition; wins prize and cash award of NT$2000: Bureau of Education chooses painting as official gift to Thailand to commemorate Constitution Day International Art Exhibition.

     - First Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Taipei; local works exhibited alongside modem art from Spain.

1957 – Investigates modern painting at Lung Chiang St. bomb shelter.

     - Begins working in oil painting, patterned after Neo Classicism, the Dunhuang frescoes, and folk art.

     - Executes semi-abstract works, laced with a strong nostalgia.

     - Concurrent with Taipei Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Hsiao Chin organizes

      Tung Ton Fan exhibit in Spain at Barcelona Garden Gallery.

1958 – January: Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Sala Clan, Madrid Gallery, Spain.

     - February: Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Seville Gallery, Spain.

     - 2nd Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Taipei, includes works by Spanish and Ecuadorian artists.

     - Wu, born as Wu Shih-lu, changes name to Wu Hao.

1959 – Ton Fan Group Exhibition held in Taipei, with simultaneous exhibitions in Italy and Spain.

1961 – Sao Paulo Biennale.

     - International Youth Painting Exhibition, Paris.

     - January: Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Spain.

     - May: Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Florence, Italy.

     - June: Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Milan, Italy.

     - Oct: Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Florence, Italy.

     - Nov: Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Italy.

     - 3rd Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Taipei Art Museum.

     - Fellow painters Ho Kang and Li Yuan-chia travel to Italy for advanced study.

1962 – Marries Pan Ting-fang in Taipei.

     - Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Mi-Chou Gallery, New York.

1963 – Li Chung-sheng’s students see Hsia Yan off at Keelung before going abroad.

     - First son, Wu Chin-fang, born.

1964 – Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Flasetti Gallery, Italy.

     - 5th Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Taipei.

     - International Youth Painting Exhibition, Paris.

     - Contemporary Chinese Art, Modem Art Museum, Rome.

     - 6th Ton Fan Group Exhibition, Taipei.

     - First daughter, Wu Chin-ning, born.

     - Li Yuan-chia, Ho Kan, Hsia Yan successively go abroad, send paintings back to exhibit in local exhibitions.

     - Except for rented space in the News Building, and exhibition of foreign works at Chungshan Hall Gallery, there are no other galleries in Taipei.

1965 – Exhibition of Chinese Artists, Milan and Rome, Italy.

1966 – Begins concentrating on printmaking, participates in Modern Print Society.

1967 – Participates in contemporary artist exhibition in United States.

     - Department of National Defense Medal of Exemplary Conduct.

1968 – Takes part in Artists’Club.

1969 – Investigates modern painting; works in wood block printing.

     - Second son, Wu Chin-chieh, born.

1970 – First International Graphic Exhibition, Lima, Peru.

     - Second daughter, Wu Chin-wen, born.

     - Department of National Defense Medal of Loyalty.

1971 – International Contemporary Graphic Exhibition, Rome and Milan, Italy.

     - 15th and final Ton Fan Group Exhibition.

     - Retires from the air force at rank of captain.

     - 11th Tokyo Graphics Exhibition, Tokyo.

1972 – Mostra International De Xilografia Milano, Italy.

     - Golden Cup Award, Art Society of China Institute, Taipei.

1973 – Chinese Artists Exhibition, Washington, D.C.

     - One-man print and sketch show, Germany.

     - One-man show, Morrison Art Gallery, Taipei.

1975 – Ten-man Contemporary Chinese Art Exhibition, Milan, Italy.

     - One-men print show, Chinese University, Hong Kong.

1976 – One-man show, Che Art Gallery, Hong Kong.

1979 – Concentrates on modern painting.

     - One-man oil painting show, Print Maker’s Gallery, Taipei.

     - Sixth International printing Biennale “Peaceful Countryside” ,England, Award.

1980 – One-men oil painting show, print Maker’s Gallery, Taipei.

1983 – Grand Opening Group Exhibition, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei.

1984 – “Second Touch” Group Exhibition, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei.

     - Professor Li Chung-sheng dies.

1985 – One-man oil painting exhibition, Lung Men Art Gallery, Taipei.

     - Plans the Li Chung-sheng Modern Painting Education Foundation.

1986 – One-men show, Ming Men Art Gallery, Taichung.

1987 – One-men show, Lung Men Art Gallery, Taipei. 

     - Chairman of Chinese Modern Graphic Society.

     - Returns to China for the first time to visit relative, where brothers and sisters for the first time in 45 years. While there, he meets artists Wang Qi, Song Yuanwen, and Lu Qing at the Central Academy of Art, Beijing.

     - One-men show, Lung Men Art Gallery, Taipei.

     - Li Chung-sheng Modern Painting Education Foundation founded, acts as chairman.

1988 – Juror, Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition and National Art Exhibition.

     - One-man show, Lung Men Art Gallery, Taipei.

     - Returns to China for mother’s funeral.

1991 – One-man show, Contemporary Art Gallery, Taichung.

     - Presenter, Li Chung-sheng Modern Painting Education Foundation Award.
